Where the song comes from:

Before the Dead debuted “Broken Arrow”, it was a Robbie Robertson original with Peter Gabriel’s on keys and backup vocals. Rod Stewart picked it up in 1991, turning it into a Top 20 radio hit — and it was that version that found its way to Phil Lesh.

Lesh brought “Broken Arrow” into the Grateful Dead at Oakland Coliseum on February 23, 1993, stepping up to the mic himself for a rare lead-vocal turn. Let Phil Sing! Over the next two years, it became one of the quieter, more personal moments of late-era Dead shows — a song that let the usually behind-the-scenes bassist step forward. Lesh kept it close for the rest of his career, reviving it again and again through Phil Lesh & Friends shows and his 1999 record Love Will See You Through.

Since Lesh’s passing in October 2024, “Broken Arrow” has taken on a second life.
