Sugilite vs. Sugilite Gel

Not all sugilite is created equal. Opaque sugilite is the more commonly available form, but translucent sugilite — known as "sugilite gel" — is exceptionally rare. The largest known deposit sits roughly 3,200 feet underground, and of the 20 tons of gem-grade material mined from it, only about 0.1% qualifies as true sugilite gel. That scarcity is what makes gel-grade pieces so highly valued among collectors.

Why Is Sugilite So Rare?

Gem-quality sugilite was first discovered in 1975 at a manganese mine near Hotazel, South Africa — and to this day, it's found in only six locations worldwide, with just one commercial mine producing it. As one of the few natural purple gemstones in existence, sugilite's rarity alone sets it apart from more common gems, making every piece in our collection genuinely one of a kind.
