A tribute to Jerry’s most legendary instrument.
This sterling silver pendant, measuring 1 1/4" x 2", is a finely detailed rendition of “Tiger” — the custom guitar built for Jerry Garcia and remains one of the most storied instruments in rock history.
The history behind the guitar:
In 1973, after receiving his first custom build from luthier Doug Irwin, Jerry Garcia went right back and asked for another — this time telling Irwin not to hold back. Built from a dense sandwich of exotic woods including cocobolo, maple, and padauk, finished with ornate brass binding and a mother-of-pearl tiger inlay, the guitar took roughly 2,000 hours of work and six years to complete.
Garcia debuted Tiger onstage in August 1979, and it quickly became his primary guitar through the 1980s, prized for the sheer range of tones it offered. Of all his instruments, Tiger logged more stage time than any other — and at Garcia’s final performance with the Grateful Dead at Chicago’s Soldier Field in July 1995, technical trouble forced a mid-encore guitar swap, making Tiger the very last guitar Jerry Garcia ever played live.
