This little charm pendant measures 1/4″ across and almost 1/2″ long (exclusive of the bail) and features a symmetrical combination of letters of “Aiko”.

This iconic song of the Grateful Dead repertoire began life as “Jock-A-Mo,” written and recorded in 1953 by New Orleans R&B musician James “Sugar Boy” Crawford and  the Cane Cutters. It told the story of two rival Mardi Gras Indian “tribes” crossing paths in a parade, built from chants Crawford explained he’d simply combined into a song.

The Grateful Dead began working “Iko Iko” into their live shows in 1977, with its first appearance coming on 5/15/77 in St. Louis as a low-key, rarely-played number that mostly showed up late in second sets through 1977-78. When it resurfaced in the 1980s, the band picked up the pace considerably, often using it to open shows. It became one of the Dead’s signature covers — played more than 180 times. It became an anthem, a song that reliably got the whole crowd dancing.
