Why is it sugilite rare?

In 1975, the first gem-quality sugilite was discovered at a manganese mine near Hotazel, South Africa. It is found in only six places in the world, with the only commercial mine in South Africa. Sugilite is one of only a few natural purple gems that is especially valuable because of the lack of gem-quality deposits.
